Il TAU è il segno con cui San Francesco d'Assisi amava firmare le lettere e le benedizioni. Il TAU infatti, ultima lettera dell'alfabeto ebraico, è indicato nella Bibbia come simbolo di salvezza. Nel libro del profeta Ezechiele e nel libro dell'Apocalisse esso è segno profetico della redenzione attraverso la Croce di Cristo. Il TAU era inoltre per il Santo il segno concreto della sua salvezza e la vittoria di Cristo sul male. Oggi il TAU è simbolo della spiritualità francescana che si esprime nell'amore per la pace, la letizia, il Creato.
